Beautiful Energy: Windows that Generate Energy from the Sun

Windows - demo

Buildings consume 39% of global energy (more than industry or transportation). Regulations around the world are increasing the pressure to make buildings more efficient. For example, new commercial buildings in the European Union must be designed to nearly net zero energy standards as of 2020. Similar regulations are appearing around the world, including in many US cities. Next Energy Technologies is developing and commercializing transparent photovoltaic (PV) windows that look like normal windows but harvest the infrared spectrum and let through a custom amount of visible light. This both solves the issue and significantly reduces overall costs by removing the duplication of glass and framing costs.

Hovey, Dr. Corey

Dr. Corey Hoven, founder and CTO of Next Energy Technologies, received his PhD from the Materials Department at UCSB. While at UCSB, he also received the Graduate Certificate in Management Practice from the Technology Management Program (TMP). Prior to the PhD, he earned BS degrees in both Physics and Anthropology, focusing on renewable energy and barriers to sustainable energy development. His overall research focus was on organic solar cells with a focus on device design. He co-founded Next Energy Technologies with Daniel Emmett after winning the TMP's New Venture Competition in 2010.
