May Luncheon Meeting (Goleta) 5/10/17

May Luncheon Meeting Topic: Revealing the fingerprints of the environment on our immune systems

Much effort has been made to understand how our genes and other "self" molecules impact our health. Meanwhile, the role of the environment (non-self) remains comparatively obscure. SerImmune is uncovering the role the environment has upon human health, through decoding and mapping of human immune repertoires -- large collections of immune molecules that include antibodies. This mapping of the immune system to the environment creates exciting new opportunities to improve medical diagnostics, vaccines, and therapeutics.

Dr. Patrick Daugherty, President & CEO of Serimmune Inc., on disease-specific antibodies

Dr. Daugherty

Dr. Daugherty is CEO of SerImmune, and Adjunt Professor of Chemical Engineering at UCSB. He received his B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Minnesota in 1993, and his Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin in 1999. He was a Research Fellow at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle during 1999-2001, before joining the Chemical Engineering faculty at UCSB in 2001. He is a recipient of a National Sciences Foundation Career Award (2005), Camille Dreyfus Teacher Scholar Aware (2006), and the Genetech Young Investigator Award from the ACS Division of Biochemical Technology (2007).

Dr. Daugherty co-founded CytomX Therapeutics, Inc. (2008) - Nasdaq: CTMX, Cynvenio Biosystems (2008), and SerImmune Inc. (2014). Daugherty was elected to the American Institute of Medicla and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) in 2001, honoring the top 2% of bioengineers. Professor Daugherty's research and current work at SerImmune Inc. is focused on the funtional characterization of human B-cell and antibody repertoires, to identify environmental factors involved in human disease, discover biomarkers for early and accurate diagnosis, and develop targeted biopharmaceuticals.
