January Luncheon Meeting Topic:

The Internet of Things

The coming 5 years will see a blending of the digital and physical worlds as IoT products are introduced into municipal, industrial, agricultural, transportation, and residential spaces. IoT is expected to be so large that it is being called "the next industrial revolution," with an expected market impact of over $1 trillion. By 2020, 24 billion sensors around the globe will be collecting and streaming 1.6 zettabytes (1.6*1021 bytes, which is comparable to the current total amount of data on Earth). In this talk we will explore the IoT landscape, investigate some of the predictions, look at the key players, and seek to understand in what ways the Internet of Things is going to impact our world beyond having smarter refrigerators and thermostats.
