Science from Space:
National Imperatives for the Next Decade & Beyond
The National Research Council (NRC) recently completed a two-year study to recommend satellite sensing projects through the mid-2020’s to reverse the decline of US leadership in remote sensing. They recommended 17 new satellite missions, including missions to improve weather forecasting and to predict climate change impacts--such as ice sheet melting and the resulting rise in sea level.
This study was chartered by NASA, the National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The resulting report was released January 15 of this year; it lays out affordable ways to retain US leadership in remote sensing. Our speaker was a member of the weather panel of the committee that produced this report. He will talk about the committee's approach and principal recommendations.
