The
Path to Light-Based Silicon Chips:
Hybrid Silicon Evanescent Lasers
Silicon photonics is a rapidly expanding field of research; the goal is to create light-based integrated circuits using standard silicon manufacturing processes. Because silicon is an inefficient emitter, integrated lasers have been a key missing element in the toolbox for silicon photonics. UCSB and Intel recently announced the world's first electrically-powered hybrid silicon laser created using standard silicon manufacturing processes. Dr. Bowers will describe the research and development of this novel device, and how it can be integrated with silicon photonic and electronic devices.
------PRESENTER------
Professor
John Bowers
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, UCSB
Dr. John E. Bowers is a professor in the UCSB Department of Electrical Engineering and the UCSB Technology Management Program. He is also CTO and cofounder of Calient Networks and founder of Terabit Technology. His research interests include silicon photonics, optoelectronic devices, optical switching, and transparent optical networks. Prof. Bowers received M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Stanford University. He worked for AT&T Bell Laboratories and Honeywell before joining UCSB.
Dr. Bowers is a fellow of the IEEE, OSA, and the American Physical Society, and a recipient of the IEEE LEOS William Streifer Award and the South Coast Business and Technology Entrepreneur of the Year Award. He has published eight book chapters, 400 journal papers, 600 conference papers, and has received 49 patents. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering.

From the Co-Presidents: This month we welcome George Holbrook of Santa Barbara as an Individual Member. Please join us in October to learn more about the rapidly advancing technologies related to silicon photonics. Dr. Bowers has attracted a lot of attention at previous SEC talks on related topics, and we look forward to this month’s updated presentation.
Reminder - we are seeking volunteers who can occasionally bring a laptop projector to our luncheon meetings. Please contact Barbara at the number above if you would like to help out. Thanks!
