Weighing Cells with Microchannel Resonators:
Sensitive mass measurements of biological samples

MS technology can be used to create biosensors. One type, suspended microchannel resonators (SMR), makes the most sensitive mass measurements of biological samples in fluid. These SMRs were introduced by Dr. Scott Manalis of the MIT Media Lab. Commercial-grade SMR sensors fabricated by Santa Barbara's Innovative Micro Technology may have significant applications in medical diagnostics, biomolecular research, biodefense, and food safety. For example, they may be used for such applications as monitoring HIV and other diseases in developing countries. This talk will describe how SMRs work and how they can be used to "weigh" individual bacteria.

------PRESENTER------

Ken Babcock
CEO, Affinity Biosensors; Division President, Innovative Micro Technology

Ken Babcock is CEO of Affinity Biosensors, a Santa Barbara startup aiming to commercialize SMRs. He is also President of the Silicon Biosensor Division at Innovative Micro Technology, the world's largest independent MEMS foundry. After receiving his Ph.D. in Physics at Harvard University, Ken moved to Santa Barbara for post-doctoral work in the Ahlers group at UCSB. He happily derailed his academic career by joining Digital Instruments to develop their magnetic force microscopy products, and took on various executive roles after Veeco's purchase of Digital Instruments.
