Double Bagging at the Nanoscale

In the drug delivery field, lipid-based carriers could be used to target the delivery of chemotherapy agents. However, the major limitation has been the premature release of the drugs due to enzymatic degradation of the lipid membranes. Dr. Zasadzinski's group has developed a fix to this problem by entrapping both the lipid carrier and the drug within a second bilayer membrane--double bagging, but at the nanoscale. They call this a vesosome. The double bagging provides a 100-fold decrease in the release rate of important chemotherapy and antibiotic drugs in the blood.
