Dynamic Applications for Underwater Acoustics:
3-Dimensional Mapping of the Ocean from the Surface to the Substrate

Using acoustics to map our oceans has increased in popularity and complexity over the past 6 decades. Since its founding in 1984, The RESON Group, Goleta, has quickly become a leader in high-resolution active SONAR for 3-dimensional mapping of both the seafloor and "targets" within the water column. Applications for this technology include but are not limited to hydrography (bathymetry charts), seafloor habitat classification, fisheries biomass surveys, marine archeology, and marine construction. This presentation will cover both the science behind the technology and the spectacular results being obtained for specific applications.

------PRESENTER------

Chris Malzone is the Scientific Applications Manager for The RESON Group. He has a masters in Oceanography from Moss Landing Marine Laboratories and has been involved in the mapping and study of the ocean for over 15 years. He has been Principal Investigator for several projects spanning the globe, including the Arctic and Antarctica. While with RESON, Chris has participated in research and development, customer training and education, as well as business development and sales. His current focus is on the development of RESON's most advanced line of SONAR with plans to exceed the needs of the academic community.

From the C0-Presidents: This month we are very pleased to welcome M. Kelley Harris of Santa Barbara as a new Individual Member, and Minot Enterprises, Inc. of Santa Barbara as a new Corporate Member. Please join us in September for another very relevant discussion - solar energy technology - and watch for other programs in the near future. Also, please see http://www.scieng.org/Scholarships.htm for a very sincere letter of thanks from a recent SEC and Scholarship Foundation recipient. We welcome your interest, comments, and participation in an SEC committee. Please send us a note or speak to a Board member if you would like to participate. See you soon!
