Why Chemical and Pharmaceutical Companies Are Interested In Why the Sky Is Blue
At the turn of the century, Lord Rayleigh explained the color of the sky as the result of light scattering off gas molecules in the atmosphere. The same theory, applied to macromolecules in solution, has become a well-established technique for measuring molecular properties. It provides absolute measurements of molecular weight, radius, and diffusion. Unlike complementary techniques such as mass spectrometry and analytical ultracentrifugation, scattering techniques can be used on fragile samples in liquid. In addition, they can provide information about how molecules are shaped and how they form more complex structures.
------PRESENTER------
Dr.
Steven Trainoff,
Director of Engineering at Wyatt Technology
Dr. Steven Trainoff has been the Director of Engineering at Wyatt Technology for seven years. Wyatt Technology is an international leader in analytical instrumentation, specializing in light scattering. He has a B.S. in physics from the California Institute of Technology and a Ph.D. from UCSB in experimental physics. His thesis concerned the non-linear dynamics of pattern-forming systems. Concurrent with his graduate work, he founded and operated SFE Consulting, where he worked with a variety of companies including a 10-year relationship with Xerox

From the President: We welcome George Bajor of Santa Barbara to Individual membership. The holidays are nearly upon us. Before the holiday rush sets in, I'd like to take this opportunity on behalf of the SEC Board to thank all of our SEC members for your continued support as we all work to bring you quality luncheon programs each month. Also, please keep an eye out for your annual membership renewal notice, which will also include a Scholarship Foundation contribution form. We encourage you to consider a contribution to this very successful local scholarship program. Looking ahead to December 8 we will hear from Roger Helke of Calient regarding optical networking. Please join us in November!
