Spintronics and Quantum Computers
In contrast to today's charge-based electronic technologies, control over the spin of electrons and nuclei in semiconductors forms the basis for the emerging field of spintronics and quantum computation. Such spins could be used to store and retrieve classical and quantum information. Research in this area may lead to powerful new "bottom-up" approaches to quantum electronics, including the molecular wiring and assembly of semiconductor nanostructures and the engineering of hybrid organic-inorganic systems. We will discuss recent experiments that explore the electronic, photonic, and magnetic control of spins in a variety of nanostructures.
------PRESENTER------
David
D. Awschalom, Ph.D.
Professor of Physics and Electrical and Compter Engineering, UCSB
David D. Awschalom received his Ph.D. in physics from Cornell University, and was a Manager of the Nonequilibrium Physics Department at the IBM Watson Research Center before joining the UCSB as a Professor of Physics. He presently holds a joint appointment in Electrical and Computer Engineering, is Director of the Center for Spintronics and Quantum Computation, and is Associate Director of the California NanoSystems Institute (CNSI). Professor Awschalom has received an IBM Outstanding Innovation Award, the Outstanding Investigator Prize from the Materials Research Society, the Magnetism Prize from the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics, the Oliver Buckley Prize from the American Physical Society, and the Agilent Europhysics Prize from the European Physical Society.

From the President: This month we welcome Sikama International Inc. of Santa Barbara; they have rejoined SEC as a corporate member. Thanks to all of you who attended our May program with presentations from the winners of the 50th Annual Santa Barbara Science Fair. The presentations were excellent, and several of our local winners went on to the State Fair with further successes at that event. This month's program provides another opportunity to hear from a true science and technology pioneer from our community. Please join us in June for Professor Awschalom's presentation. Also, please note the new lunch prices are in effect in June: $14 for members, $19 for non-members.
