Being Smart about "Smart" Materials:
the Chemical Design of New Materials
There has been much interest in multifunctional or "smart" materials, such as piezoelectrics, magnetostrictive materials, shape memory alloys, and piezomagnets. They have diverse applications including medical ultrasound, smart structures in automobiles, naval sonar, and micromachines. The Center for the Chemical Design of Materials (CDM) at UCSB aims to increase understanding of the fundamental origins of these phenomena, which are rooted in the properties of the chemical bond. Such insight will facilitate the design of additional multifunctional materials. The CDM is a National Science Foundation-funded interdisciplinary forum for research, education, and public engagement in the chemistry of multifunctional materials.

From the Co-Presidents: Happy New Year!! This month's luncheon program provides an excellent opportunity to hear about a new NSF-funded initiative at the cutting edge of materials science. Looking ahead to February, our Membership Chair Gary Kravetz will speak about employment trends in the local technology sector. Gary's talks are always well attended, so mark your calendar for February 10. Annual membership renewals have been mailed out. Please take a moment to renew your membership and also consider a donation to our scholarship fund - it is truly a worthy cause. Finally, on behalf of the Board of Directors, I want to note with sympathy the passing of Chuck Brown, a long-time SEC member. He will be missed.
