Bridging
Cultures :
JAPAN–US AND ACADEME-INDUSTRY
Collaboration between academia and industry is important for advancing technology. However, there is a universal disconnect between "curiosity-driven" and "profits-driven" research. Another cultural gap is created by different communication styles and ways of thinking in Japan and the USA. To bridge these gaps and achieve common goals, effective communication is needed. Dr. Yoshie will discuss ways to improve communication in trans-Pacific and academic-industrial partnerships.

From the President: Thanks again to all of you who have renewed your memberships and donated to SEC's scholarship fund. 2004 should be a banner year for the SEC, and we are still accepting contributions. Please join us in March and see the SEC's web site www.scieng.org to find out more about upcoming events. Looking ahead, our April 8 meeting will present a discussion on "How Space Weather Affects Our Daily Lives” by Bill Radasky of Metatech Corporation. Be sure to mark your calendar.
