A New Treatment for Valvular Heart Disease Using the Patient's Own Tissue

Valvular heart disease is treated today with replacement devices--either mechanical or tissue valves made with animal or cadaver tissue. The research group at CardioMend has developed instruments and a procedure that allow surgeons to reconstruct a diseased heart valve using a patient's own tissue. Single-use, disposable instruments are used to size the valve, cut a novel geometric tissue pattern, and hold the tissue in place during reconstruction. After the operation, the patient is left with only a piece of his or her own tissue and sutures.

From the Co-Presidents: Due to a schedule conflict at this time, our planned March luncheon with Barry Keenan of VivoMetrics has been replaced with this new topic presented by Dr. Jack Love of CardioMend, another innovative local biomedical firm. Also this month we welcome two new members: Thomas P. Riederer and William A. Theeringer. Looking ahead, our April 10 meeting will present a discussion on "The Chemistry of Winemaking" by Fred Brander of Brander Vineyards. Be sure to mark your calendar.
