Speech Processing Anytime, Anywhere:
How Close Are We?

Speech Recognition and Synthesis have a long history. If you ask people in speech processing where the industry is headed, many of them will say that they envision a time in the near future when speech will be a mainstream communication tool with machines for communication and information access. How close are we to realizing this dream? This month's talk will provide a state-of-the-art of today's technology while trying to answer this question.

Come find out more.

------PRESENTER------

Dr. Jean-Claude Junqua
Director, Panasonic Speech Technology Laboratory
of
Panasonic Technologies Company

Jean-Claude Junqua received his Engineer degree from ENSEM (France) in Electronics and Automation, his Master and Doctorate degrees and the "Habilitation à diriger des recherches" from the University of Nancy I (France) in the field of Computer Science. In 1989, he joined Panasonic's Speech Technology Laboratory in Santa Barbara, California, where he currently serves as Director.

His current interests cover all aspects of automatic speech recognition, speech synthesis, dialogue, multimodal systems and biometrics. He is the author/co-author of more than 100 articles and 50 patents along with two recent books entitled "Robustness in Automatic Speech Recognition" and "Robust Speech Recognition in Embedded Systems and PC Applications". At the beginning of 2001, he also co-edited a book on "Robustness in Languages and Speech Technology". Jean-Claude Junqua is currently on the Editorial Board of the Speech Communication Journal and the ACM magazine, Computers in Entertainment.

From the Co-Presidents: Although computer speech recognition has existed in science fiction for many years, it is only now becoming practical in the real world. We think that you will agree that this month's presentation is on the cutting edge of technology. Please join us as Dr. Junqua describes how communication with our electronic devices will evolve from pressing buttons to simply speaking.
