A Chemists's Approach to Winemaking
Technically speaking, wine is an ethanol/water mixture containing various chemical constituents, some present in grapes and some coming from the fermentation process. Fred Brander, founder of The Brander Vineyard in Santa Ynez Valley, will discuss the chemical components of wine and their role in wine flavor and quality. You'll have the opportunity to taste wines to experience the contributions of these basic components. There is no additional charge for wine tasting.

Brander
Winemaker, The Brander Vineyard
C. Frederic "Fred" Brander, was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. His family moved to Santa Barbara while he was young. Fred graduated from Harvey Mudd College with a degree in Chemistry, and went on to pursue studies in enology at UC Davis. Fred and his family established the Brander Vineyard in the Santa Ynez Valley in 1975, where he quickly developed a reputation for making outstanding Sauvignon Blanc.

From the Co-Presidents: Last month our scheduled speaker had to cancel at the last minute, which caused us to make an unannounced change in the speaker. We thank Dr. Jack Love for filling in on short notice with his interesting talk on development in the field of heart valve repair and our members for their flexibility. Next month we feature talks by the winners of the local Science Fair. We believe that you will be pleasantly surprised by the high quality and diversity of the work being done by our local students.
