Microcantilevers for medical diagnostics, chemical sensors, and electronic noses
An exciting new chemical sensing technology uses microcantilevers similar to those used in Atomic Force Microscopes. By applying a chemically-sensitive coating to a cantilever surface, a wide range of specialized and extremely sensitive detectors have been made. Cantilever sensors have recognized specific DNA sequences and detected disease markers, explosives, nerve gas, and more. They have also been used to make "electronic noses" that create and compare aroma fingerprints.

From the Co-Presidents: Welcome to new member Barbara Levi. We are grateful for the on-going support of our members -- the backbone of the SEC. September's presentation on the new chemical sensing technology using microcantilevers similar to those used in Atomic Force Microscopes again highlights the strengths of our local engineering and scientific community and SEC's members. Many thanks to Yvonne for her efforts in coordinating the lunch programs. We look forward to the interesting and informative topics of local interest at upcoming meetings. Membership forms can now be downloaded from the web at http://www.scieng.org.
